Many webmasters use splash pages on their website to serve as an introduction into that website. This page often comes with flash animations. It is not considered an important feature of any website these days. Using splash pages can annoy the visitors sometimes and it is not helpful for them as well.
Splash pages will cause the visitors to click one more time to reach to the main website. The people visiting the website are forced to sit through the full animation. Most of the time visitors don't continue with that page and leave that immediately. Search engines can only see the website if it includes html links pointing into the site. The website will be indexed by search engines easily by using site-maps like XML site-map. Search engine don't use any other way to go through the website.
So using splash pages can stop search engines to index your website fully and most of the time it does not perform well in result page. These pages are neither helpful nor essential so it is better to avoid these.
